Christmas Star Ornament

Hey all! Thanks so much for being super patient while I put this pattern together. I so appreciate you! After reviewing my free crochet video, I was able to write it out in traditional shorthand; I’m still trying to get used to drawing the diagrams, so if that’s more your preference, hang tight a bit longer (eventually I’ll make them look halfway decent lol!)

Anyhoo, here are two versions of the Christmas Star I came up with. Let me know which one’s your favorite, or share your own design and how you’d make it your own.

Version 1: “Free Hanging Star”

Skill-level: Easy

Materials:

  • Size G/8 crochet hook

  • Red Heart Christmas/Holiday Ombré

  • Snips

  • Tapestry needle

  • 1/8 inch ribbon (opt.)

  • Stitch counter(s) (opt.)

Instructions:

  1. Ch. 10 and sl st close to form ring;

  2. Ch. 3 then dc 1 in center of ring; **ch. 2, then dc 1; ch. 1, then dc 1*

    Repeat (*) across rnd for a total of 14 ch sp; to complete rnd sl st last ch into the 2nd ch at start;

  3. Ch. 1 the sc 1 into 1st ch sp; then in the next ch sp **dc 1, trbc 1, then ch 2; trbc 1, dc 1; sc 1 into following ch sp*

    Repeat (**) across rnd;

    To finish the rnd, sl st into the first sc;

  4. ***Sl st next 2 sts and 1 in first ch sp; ch 3 then sc into the 3rd ch from hook (this will create your “point”); sl st next 3 st(s);*

    Repeat (***) across rnd to form the points of your star;

    finish rnd by sl st into start of rnd;

  5. Ch 20 and sl st into first ch to create your hanger; clip and tuck yarn.

  6. Hang your brand new ornament!

Version 2: “Star Wreath”

Skill-level: Easy

Materials: see version 1 list

Instructions:

  1. Ch. 8 and close to form ring;

  2. Ch. 3 then dc 1 in center of ring; **ch. 2, then dc 1; ch. 1, then dc 1*

    Repeat (*) across rnd for a total of 13 ch sp; to complete rnd sl st last ch into the 2nd ch at start;

  3. Ch. 1 the sc 1 into 1st ch sp; then in the next ch sp **hdc 1, dc 1, then ch 2; dc 1, hdc 1; sc 1 into following ch sp*

    Repeat (**) across rnd;

    To finish the rnd, sl st into the first sc;

    OPT: switch skein colors here to create a contrasting border around the star;

  4. Sl st up next 2 sts and 1st ch sp; then ch 1 and sc into the first ch sp (ch 1 counts as first sc);

  5. ***Ch. 5 and then 2 sc into the next ch sp*;

    Repeat (***) across rnd; sl st last ch into 1st st of rnd;

  6. Ch. 1 then sc 2 into next st; sc 5 across chain; 2 sc in 6th st, at increase point;

  7. ****Sc 6 across next chain and 2 sc into next increase point*;

    repeat (****) across rnd to expand wreath;

  8. Sl st into the first st to complete the rnd, then clip and tuck yarn.

    OPT: to firm up your wreath, you can sl st strait one more rnd

  9. Use a festive 1/8 inch ribbon to create a hanger for your ornament.

  10. Hang your star and welcome Christmas!
