Refashioning #5: Hoodie Makeover
During a little spring cleaning this year, I found this old hoodie in the coat closet. It’s too big for me, very old judging by the state of the zipper, and is pilling in several places.
Needless to say, it needs a serious makeover…
Just looking at it, I think there’s a couple things I need to do to spruce it up:
First, let’s take it in some and then bring up the hem a lot. Originally I planned to keep the length the same, but upon second glance I realized that would be a mistake. The oversized look is not a flattering one to me, and I’m really enjoying the cropped sweaters I’ve been making lately.
To do this I’ll need to first remove the sleeves -which were already ripped in a few places - and the zipper to get direct access to the pockets. These I plan to move up along with the hemline, but with a creative twist to help pull the new look together.
Slimming a hoodie like this won’t be a problem at all since it’s made with a very simple pattern of just two seams - although, those seams are on the shoulders so I will have to make new seams on the side.
Once the excess fabric is removed, it’ll be time to tackle the pockets and the hem. This original gather has pretty much lost most of its strength, so I’m thinking it’s time to replace it with something more whimsical but effective…
Important note:
The week I started this project was the week of the last tornado warning in my area- one that actually spanned a few different states! I mention this because storm-anxiety is real, and it’s best to keep your mind occupied when you think you’re going to get blown away (as you wait in the Harry Potter closet).
As you can see, the progress is coming along nicely! Already it fits and looks a lot better than before.
